David designed a steel and timber platform which allowed piling to take place adjacent to a historical tunnel.
The weight of the 170tonne Bauer BG40 piling rig
was supported by existing bridge footings and new mini-piles, rather than apply a surcharge to the ground retained by the tunnel.
The action of the piling rig was barely noticeable by the team monitoring the tunnel – having even less effect on the tunnel than passing trains.
